apl internship scheme

Interested in travel and lifestyle writing?
Fancy working with a young and friendly team in central London?
Absolute Publishing, the publisher of consumer and trade titles including National Geographic Traveller, ABTA Magazine, Welcome to London and Spa Secrets and a series of Supplements is launching a brand new internship scheme and is looking for motivated post-graduate journalism students wishing to create an attractive portfolio.

How long will the internship last?
Internships can last between two and four weeks. We will run the scheme throughout the year except October and November which are our busiest months and we wouldn’t be able to give interns our full attention.

What will you do?
You will be busy! You will be involved in every aspect of the office life.
Tasks will be wide ranging and varied including: general admin, research, writing, attending events whenever appropriate, and conducting interviews. You might be asked to contribute to our growing portfolio of websites as well as to the print titles including magazines and directories.

Your daily tasks will vary from something which might not be glamorous but which is essential to get right such as fact checking destination guides for our directories to much more interesting city guides, reviews, short features and news stories.

You’ll be expected to attend a few events during your placement, either during the day or in the evening if you’re available. We’ve sent previous interns on press trips after they completed their placement as a way to say ‘thank you for your hard work’ and help them build their portfolio.

You will not be asked to make photocopies or go out to get us chocolates, but if you fancy joining the team down the pub after work you’ll always be asked round. The occasional tea round will be appreciated, too!

What are we looking for?
We’re looking for friendly, accurate, organised, efficient and calm under pressure people. We’re a small team so being a good team player is essential. You need to have an excellent grasp of English, high standards of spelling, punctuation and grammar, to be able to write both serious and more light-hearted copy, have good research skills and a confident phone manner. Interest in travel and lifestyle desirable.

Prior to the internship starting we will ask candidates to meet us for an informal chat to make sure we’re all happy to work together.

What will you get out of it?
You’ll gain experience of working within a vibrant publishing environment and a varied collection of cuttings. You’ll receive on-going guidance and feedback on your work from a team of experienced writers and editors as well as mentoring from a dedicated member of our staff.

Where will you be based?
Our office is on City Road, Old Street Tube Station in the City of London. Office hours are 9am-5.30pm Monday to Friday.

What will you be paid?
Interns will receive a daily allowance for their travel and lunch expenses.

How do you apply?
Please email a covering letter explaining why you would like to work at Absolute Publishing and up-to-date CV to editorial@absolutepublishing.com

Please note only successful applicants will be notified.
